Psychology of cold plays a big role, too. We were happy and comfortable drilling at an average temp of -44C in Saskatchewan in '89, but whenever the temperature went below -50C, people started to notice. Productivity really dropped as people forgot the 3C difference and spent too much time wondering if they were slowly freezing. At least there are trees to break the wind in Sask, but not at Voisey's Bay South. And people think a Toronto winter is bad!

The choke point is about -40C. Diesel starts to gel and the propane in the cylinders turns to liquid - coil heaters stop heating, water freezes, and at least once every winter some group of dumb drillers burns their tent down.

Isn't exploration wonderful?
