Maybe not in America but its common place in dictatorships, especially following a coup. There are worse examples than just sending a few political opponents to the gallows. Much much worse but even in modern times we see the powerful elite trying to gag religious leaders who have divergent ideas, take control over the media, ban criticism, black ball dissidents, etc.
