The reparations were payable only in gold marks, they didn't pay any in inflated currency, in fact never paid much of them at all, that was what the Dawes plan was all about, and before that the french occupation of the Rhineland ... it was not possible to pay any significant amount of the reparations, figures involved were fantastically high, had they plugged away paying them they'd still be working on it, the whole thing was a vengeance project of Clemenceau, who caused the second war by paving the way for Hitler

What they paid off with inflated marks was the war debt, which was massive and mostly all held in Central Powers countries, also a lot went to various forms of dole, which were not much from the individual's point of view and hardly livable, but added up, remember it was Bismarck who had invented unemployment insurance, workmen's compensation, old age pensions ... and it worked well for a little while after the war, got things started rolling

There's a poster nick of pogohere, who will show up at the mention of Weimar doings, quite informed on it ... the actual happenings vary quite radically from common perceptions of it ... some did well in that time, most lost ... takeaway lesson is, in inflation you want a big mortgage on your house, in deflation you don't, so you have to call it right

<workers were paid benefits by the state>

check

<much additional currency was printed,>

check

<no goods with which to trade.>

check

<The government printed money to deal with the crisis; this allowed Germany to pay war loans and reparations with worthless marks>

1/2 check, and continues... despite a 'worried' China.

<This also led to pay raises for workers and for businessmen who wanted to profit from it>

Or to sit on the couch...... check

<Stresemann's first move as foreign minister was to issue a new currency,>

WEll, we need a new name... hmmmm.... sounds like an idea for a contest on the thread, or SI in general.

The following contains some very crucial insights and debunks a few of the 'myths' regarding the Weimar Republic.

You will likely find that what we think caused it, may have actually been what got the country back on its feet....

Any discussion that fails to mention Schacht is deficient. It was Schacht who ran the rescue in Weimar and in the 1930s.
