A New Zealander is one of four men convicted in Brazil of running of an investment scam that fleeced victims around the world.

The operation, which was run in Sao Paulo, called investors around the world and got them to sign on to a fictitious scheme promising high returns, the Sao Paulo state prosecutor's office said in a statement.

New Zealander Alan Craig Chard was convicted of fraud and sentenced to five years and 11 months jail for his part in the scam, as were two Britons, John Patrick Trainor and James Michael McCann.

An Israeli, Doron Mukamal, was found guilty of fraud and money laundering and sentenced to 24 years and four months in prison.

The men were arrested in April 2008 following a year of telephone wiretaps by investigators. Officials say the group operated a call centre that ripped off investors in Britain, Spain, Australia, the United States and several Asian countries to the tune of several million dollars.
