Cisco AS5300 Outperforms Ascend MAX TNT in Independent Tests
Cisco's Universal Access Server Sets New Performance Benchmark in LANQuest Labs Tests
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 27, 1997--Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that LANQuest Labs has released performance benchmark test results for the Cisco AS5300 and the Ascend MAX TNT.
The test results show that the Cisco AS5300 performs three to ten times better than the Ascend MAX TNT depending on the test environment, validating the Cisco AS5300 universal access server as the performance leader.
Cisco Throughput Scales Linearly while Ascend Drops Calls Early
The goal of the LANQuest Labs comparison tests was to determine which remote access platform provided the greatest throughput for both analog and digital calls, measured in packets per second. According to LANQuest Labs, the Cisco AS5300 demonstrated a substantial performance advantage over Ascend's MAX TNT at all traffic levels and for both the upload and download processes. ''Our test results showed a clear generational performance divide between Cisco and Ascend's remote access server offerings,'' said Gail James, President of LANQuest Labs. ''The Cisco AS5300 delivered superior peak performance over all packet sizes and packet rates compared with the Ascend MAX TNT for both analog and ISDN remote access connections.'' Performance is Key
''Density without performance is nearly worthless to a service provider,'' said Michael Howard of Infonetics, Inc. in San Jose, Calif., a leading networking industry research firm. ''To be truly carrier-class, remote access platforms must deliver the same performance to the dial user, whether one port, 48 ports or 96 ports are in use. The user's service level cannot be dependent on the number of ports in use at any moment.''
New Dial Access Systems Further Scale Networks to Unprecedented Levels
In a related announcement, Cisco today reaffirmed its commitment to delivering increased performance, flexibility and improved management with the announcement of the Cisco AccessPath(TM)-TS3 and AccessPath-LS3 (see ''New Cisco dial access systems help service providers offer new services, scale networks''). These two carrier-class integrated dial access systems enable service providers and large enterprise customers to offer differentiated services, scale their networks linearly to unprecedented levels and manage large dial pools.
''As enterprise businesses deploy increasingly network-intensive applications like high-speed Web graphics and net conferencing, service providers are compelled to offer maximum performance per user. Just like the PC industry, power users will demand the best platform performance to protect application performance,'' said Kevin Kennedy, vice president and general manager of Cisco's Network-to-User business unit. ''Cisco's philosophy is to ensure investment protection through offering the industry's most scalable and high-performance dial access servers.''
Testing Methodology and Philosophy
LANQuest Labs used the latest software images for both remote access servers in all tests. The reported test results represent the total average aggregate throughput (in packets per second) for that duration.
