From what I have read, the Chinese do not see this buying of base metals as an investment so much as a chance to get cheap stockpiles to be used in the future when prices return to higher levels, and also as a way to unload their immense of holdings of US dollars.

But you are right, I think they would prefer an orderly market if that is possible.

No, but they may (partly) be buying BEFORE their investments ($US) get wiped out. The latest dollar blip up with metals down seems quite a boon for them.
