I think many times more are saved by firearms than are killed by them. Most times a gun is used defensively no one gets shot. I'll relate a story from my first wife. Years before we were married, she was traveling to visit her sister in VA. Driving at night, in a rural area. She stopped to get gas and coffee and saw a guy in the station giving her the eye. After she left, he turned up on the highway trying to get her to turn off the road. She turned on her car interior lights and pointed a small handgun at him as he was driving beside her, mouthing the words 'you want it?'. When the guy saw the gun, he hit his brakes, she drove and never saw him again.
