"Are you really arguing that it is not wise to attempt to slow the rate of consumption of petroleum products?"

No, though I do question where the line is between too little and too much taxation on gasoline. I'm not prepared to answer that, so find it difficult to take a position. However, I do think lower fuel prices now could help spur a recovery, after which time we can revisit further limitations on consumption by whatever means.

"You think it is, um, unAmerican to try and, pressure folks to reduce their reliance on oil and use the disincentives to facilitate at least a partial transition to renewable energy sources?"

No, certainly not. See above.

You are right. Economy is either headed for a crash due to oil price inflation in 2010 or a kabooooooommmm...

I feel it now. Electric excitement due to new perceptions of worldwide shortages of fuel. Return to 100 dollar oil. 1 in 10 people working in Petroleum exploration, development, maintenance or substitution. GM changes its name to General Fuels and Electric Transportation. Electric cars using gallium aluminum air batteries federally mandated. Cities being built in the Arctic Islands to support submarine supplied oil rigs. Causeway built to Victoria, Somerset and Baffin Islands. Colorado turned into a Kerogen theme park. Hydrazine sea floor harvesting begins. Talk of towing hydrocarbon asteroids back to earth. Return to energy efficient houses in hill sides. (Cave, underground dwelling). Canada builds 20 new reactors.

Maybe 2011. New boom will be fuel.
