last night news mentioned four students at delaware college coming down with flue.. haven't been to mexico. news later in the night mentioned 100 suspect cases in new york.

If this is a pandemic event, is it a big deal if there are very few deaths from it? I wondered myself what the average number of deaths in the US there were from just a 'normal flu' season. Even one death is tragic, but so far, I think this 'swine flu' is blown out of proportion. This is what I found:

Flu Deaths
Each year, the flu is reported to be responsible for almost 36,000 deaths, including about 46 to 74 deaths in children. Last year, 83 deaths in children have already been reported to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System.

Unfortunately, this is not unusual in a typical flu season.
There have been forty-five influenza-associated pediatric death this season.
