The GOP is on track to lose more states in the south, as well. Watch for Democrats to win more senate seats, especially in the states that went for Obama, NC, VA and FL.
The Specter affiliation switch is a big deal. Specter voted with the GOP and Bush 65% of the time. The watershed continues.

Specter is 79 and has had some serious health issues. One can reasonably expect this to be his final term, and being something of a independent all his life he may just chuck political manners and do as he damn well pleases with an eye on his legacy. Perhaps this legacy lies somewhere within his ancient Democratic roots but that not really known... who can forget that this "self-styled moderate republican" pulled out all stops to ram Clarence Thomas onto the Supreme Court.

Given that Specter was ripe for a pickoff months ago I'm surprised no prominent Democrat has the nomination locked up already. Santorum was a more difficult target and there were a bunch lined up to take him on. The platitudes from Obama and Rendell notwithstanding, the right Democrat could unseat Specter and beat easily Toomey, and I hope one has the fire to go for it.
