My father (a lawyer) had a lawyer friend. They worked a couple cases together. At one point I read a brief they'd submitted to the court that the other guy had written. I was appalled. Poor grammar, misspelled words, etc. I was a newbie at the time, but could not understand how someone would be content to submit that work product to the court.

The guy's attitude was, "it's the substance that counts." I disagreed. If you lose the judge's interest at the outset due to poor writing, you're not going to dazzle him/her, no matter how strong your legal argument.

Couldn't agree more and I wish they weren't as intimidated by writing, but hopefully it will lessen over time.
