To: NOW who wrote (199058 ) 4/30/2009 1:33:40 AM From: Skeeter Bug Respond to of 306849 >>personal responsibility is not all that it is cracked up to be either though. zip code matters more than that.<< zip code is correlated, not causative. the data shows that diet is causative - and the results are incredible. a spanish study of 14000 participants had their diets divided into the three categories. the category that ate primarily fish, chicken, fruits, vegetables, nuts and olive oil had 83% fewer incidents of diabetes. almost anybody can eat a similar diet (i do), but you can't reduce diabetes by 83% by moving to a different zip code. once one's paradigm is right, there are basically two kinds of diets. 1. an anti inflammatory diet 2. a pro inflammatory diet there is some middle ground, but i'd estimate less than 5% of americans fit into the anti-inflammatory and middle ground areas. 95% are full on pro inflammatory mode. of course chronic disease will be 5x higher than someone on an anti inflammatory diet. silent inflammation drives chronic disease, which is why aspirin is so effective in reducing the risk of chronic disease (except it can cause ulcers and kill you, too). not by zip code, but by diet. if you want inflammation, do the following: 1. don't eat fish or take EPA/DHA supplements 2. eat lots of animal fat 3. eat lots of vegetable oil 4. eat lots of high glycemic load carbs 5. drink lots of high glycemic sodas sounds like a typical american diet - macaroni and cheese, french fries and a large coke. disease, one meal at a time. genetics also plays a role, too. having bad genetics just makes eating an anti-inflammatory diet even more important. manuel uribe reduced his calorie intake well over 90% and reduced his hunger, eliminated his depression and lost almost 600 lbs in 3 years - no change in zip code required. he did have to change his diet to reign in his out of control hormonal responses which previously drove his never ending hunger. in another 5 years, this former 1234 lb man will be around 250 lbs and have set the world record for most weight loss - and he smiles ear to ear. he's happy. and his blood work is currently better than most folks 1/3 his weight - and his zip code didn't change (or the mexican equivalent). diet is *huge*. unfortunately, most people have never been exposed to an anti-inflammatory diet so they have no basis of comparison. it doesn't help that all these fad diets are different versions of pro-inflammatory diets that are bound to fail because they don't account for the body's hormonal response to food.
