I would guess that Gates is Obama's spokesman here. Catch Amir Taheri on Hugh Hewist (podcasts will be available here a little later this evening). Taheri calls Iran a "roiling volcano" with large areas of the country "no-go" areas for the regime. He also points out that the current regime cannot negotiate because they don't want any particular thing; they want everything. It isn't just with us; they can't negotiate with anybody. But he also points out that the regime has a history of backing down when faced with hard opposition. For instance, they took a bunch of Russians hostage at the same time they took the American embassy in 1979. The Russians kidnapped some Iranian diplomats and threatened to kill them. Khomenei let the Russians go.
