Rules on the water are more like police state rules. Any of several US agencies can board and search your "home" without any cause at anytime day or night. Some are courteous and some are not.

Anyhow be prepared to have bright lights shone in your face and to have automatic weapons pointed at you. And I am talking today not some grim future view. Ports and waterways in general are highly policed in many or most parts of the world.

Of course, depending on your boat type and condition and location you will be treated differently depending on whether or not the authorities consider you a desirable or an undesirable. In other words are you perceived as adding a bunch of tourist type money to the local economy or are you simply taking up space, not paying your share of property taxes, and possibly being an eyesore? Not staying in the same place too long helps.

Some people get boarded all the time and others have never been boarded in years.

I have been looking at living on a boat for some time and making steps towards that goal, but not to try and escape the "Nazis", but rather to escape the rat race and to be around other outside-the-box thinking types.

I've heard the weather is nice and balmy right off the coast of Somalia.
