I had been comparing the beef ounce for ounce. What I found was a piece that mentioned in passing that they don't compare it that way but rather fat gram for fat gram. Since grass-fed beef has dramatically less fat, I would have had to compare something like two ounces of grass-fed vs one ounce of grain-fed. As long as they clearly say that they are comparing fat composition, and specify that grass fed meat is generally leaner, I would not have a problem with that.I don't know about you but that trick seems deceptive to me. After all, people would substitute grass-fed for grain-fed ounce for ounce of meat, not gram for gram of fat. In effect, what they're saying when they claim greater omega 3, for example, is that grass-fed has less fat. Their claims make it sound like they're independent factors but they aren't. To be completely honest what they should says is that, because grass-fed has less saturated fat, it also provides better nutrition PER CALORIE. Since I don't have a fat phobia or specifically saturated fat phobia, I would not necessarily be sold on that factor alone (less fat). If anything, I am an Omega 6 fat phobe, and grass fed beef has less of that, more specifically less of Arachidonic acid. A bit extra Omega 3 that grass fed beef has is not going to make any difference to someone who supplements Omega 3 (or eats a lot of sashimi). Another factor is that the grass fed animals live closer to their natural environment, eat what they were designed to eat, and are much healthier, less medicated than the feedlot raised animals. But that is just my preference, to get grass fed meat when I have a choice. It is not to say that grain fed meat is bad, or unhealthy. IMO, it is certainly healthier to let the poor cow suffer the consequences of unhealthy grain diet while i eat its meat rather than suffer the consequences of unhealthy grain based first hand by eating grains.
