PS

I am sending you a 77th Special Forces Group coin. I selected that one because it is the earliest Special Forces coin I have in duplicate. I know the 10th SFG had a coin early too and am not sure which was first.

Many think the 77th was the initial SF Group. It was founded on 16 Sept 1953 and was redesignated the 7th SF Group in 1960.

However the 10th SF Group was founded in Europe on 11 June 1952.

I started SF training in July 1962. I used to think I missed all the action because I got to SF so late!!! I learned better after serving 11 of the next 17 years overseas. LOL

FYI, the 7th provided most of the SF personel for the Son Tay raid and many other Top Secret and never disclosed operations.

One of my dearest buddies who I call uncle was in the 77th and the 7th. He was in the 3rd Infantry Division in Korea in 51-52.I met him in Berlin in 63. For some reason he decided to look out for me and we are buddies still today.

Neeka,
What you are really leaning into is the brotherhood of American patriot warriors.

The service that one joins does not matter, nor does the unit.
I love them all equally
and hope you do too.
I admit I do have a special place in my heart and prayer for those who fought.

I only ask that you learn to separate wannabees from the real veterans, and focus on the Vets. For they created America and have kept her free.

unclewest:

Here is a WWII version of a similar tradition. My father flew out of England for the OSS with an outfit called the Carpetbaggers. They flew single plane missions behind enemy lines dropping saboteurs (Joes) and materials to the Resistance in many countries.

They had a similar routine---He wrote, and left in his WWII billfold, the following note:

"These bills from different countries are part of a collection of bills from countries that you flew over. It started with a U.S. dollar bill. It was to be carried at all times. It was called the "short snorter" club. If you were in a bar and claimed to be a "short snorter" you had to produce the bill or buy a drink for every member who could show a short snorter bill. The bill started out with your signature on it and every "short snorter" you met signed it."

Thank You UW, for the Special Forces coin and patch you sent. You can be sure they will get attention and they are wonderful gifts I will always be proud of. Most of all though, these symbols are an honor from one I will always respect. I buy things for myself, but I can't buy anything as meaningful as what a friend gives.

My Best and Thanks for your Service,

Josh
