Any chance they might get their growth from buying a big firm?

Sure. They could double by buying a company as big as... hmmm... QCOM. Since the acquirer always pays a premium, it would be smarter to buy that company and wait for QCOM to buy than to hold QCOM while it executes such a strategy.

So... from an investors perspective, it's a dim light at the end of that tunnel.

Baby elephants gain a lot of weight percentage wise as they grow to be big elephants. Big elephants might gain a lot of weight too (especially big pregnant elephants), but not percentage wise.
