That's a fair statement.

As to the Rainman statement, I don't think most parents could care less about savantism, if they can get to a point where their child is communicative.

The starting point for dealing with autism is in establishing communication; once that is done there is a basis for making progress. Without communication, I don't think there is much hope for the severe cases.
