My knowledge of this subject is not significant; what I know is only because of my daughter's involvement. I know that she occasionally treats Aspergers kids who have speech disorders but her focus is more on severely autistic children and adolescents.

I'm not sure but I don't believe they really know what CAUSES the communication disorders in autism -- other than broad classifications, only that the standard treatments for speech disorders are woefully inadequate. Pretty much, it seems to me, behavioral methods are gaining acceptance it is the only thing that works.

A lot of focus has been on ABA (behav. analysis) for autistics, but it seems (to me, at least) like a more narrow focus on communication may end up providing the best bang for the buck. Once you get the communication problem diminished, you stand a better change of dealing with other behaviors with more traditional means. Ultimately, there is a certain amount of Pavlov involved, no matter what.
