One viewpoint is that isolating yourself from the world is a catastrophe.

While Europe has some obvious choke points with Russia controling natural gas, the Straits of Gibralter and the Suez Canal being vulnerable, etc. the US also imports about 40% of it's oil from outside North America, and the US depends on the Panama Canal.

There is some evidence the Obama administration is near panic about the economy - the threats, the FIAT deal, and offshore taxation are examples.

My guess is the chances of an extra zero being added to US currency is now about 0.5 to 2 percent. That might happen in the next 7 years.

Cutting the value of the currency 15-50% could happen within the next 18 months, with near zero warning. That could be defacto established by a memo between the US, China and Japan, with some Saudi acquiescence. Note that all four countries have a strong interest in improving the global economy.
