(Updates with Xstrata contingency plan)

SANTIAGO, May 6 (Reuters) - Mine workers at Xstrata's (XTA.L) Lomas Bayas copper deposit in northern Chile went on strike Wednesday morning after wage talk mediation failed, their union said.

Union leader Elias Andronico, who represents 385 workers at the deposit, told Reuters they began their protest at 3 a.m. and union workers stopped working completely at the start of the 8 a.m. shift.

"We want the company to also think of its personnel. We still want to negotiate," Andronico said.

Xstrata said late Tuesday it had made a final offer to workers to increase their pay by 4 percent above inflation instead of the 6 percent raise they are demanding, and had implemented a contingency plan to minimize any strike impact on output.

The Lomas Bayas deposit, which is located in Chile's Atacama desert, has an annual output capacity of around 75,000 tonnes of copper. (Reporting by Manuel Farias; Writing by Simon Gardner; Editing by John Picinich)
