You may be absolutely correct. One of my favorite "big" views is that 2000-02 was "A" of a secular bear market, and since 2007 we are in Wave "C" -- and "C" is fully entitled to morph into an Ending Diagonal, which may run for quite a few years. Your Flat may prove to be Wave 2 (or part thereof) of that putative ED. This would also go a long way towards explaining the fact that the 2007 decline up to date DOES look suspiciously like a three-waver.
