The mainstream media loves to talk about the "moderate" voters as a monolithic entity. The reality is that "moderate" is just a catch-all term for a vast diverse sea of opinions that cannot easily be classified as "liberal" or "conservative."

Sort of...and that's exactly the point...it is a calibration catalyst for both sides. As a block entity, it shares views of both ideologies but rejects the extreme views that are also present in both ideologies.

But to denigrate political opponents as "extremist" is just pure demagoguery, and in that respect, Powell is no different than Rush, I'm sorry to say.

Wow...in your view of the world there's be no distinction between what is appropriate and what is not. I can tell you that, in relative terms, the (non monolithic) center knows the difference...I think it's why dems have won the last couple of elections...the GOP has become overly influenced by its hard right constituency and moderates have noticed...that's Powell's message...and McCain's, Snowe's, Graham, even Specter I suppose (although one can easily attribute his conversion to his re-election chances)...

What Colin Powell considers "moderate" will not be what other moderates believe in, and that's fine. This is a big country; there is plenty of room for disagreement. But to denigrate political opponents as "extremist" is just pure demagoguery, and in that respect, Powell is no different than Rush, I'm sorry to say.

You just elevated Rush to a Colin Powell. I have to admit that I don't see what others see in Powell and I do believe he sold out the nation when it comes to the invasion of Iraq but even I see a huge difference in the quality of Powell vis a vis Rush. All I can say is.....wow!
