Dude I don't think I even have a 750 credit score and I just got two high quality credit cards recently so beware of anecdotes.

At the same time, Capital One jacked up my 7.99% rate so I cancelled them.

Not that it matters since I don't carry balances.

Well I am in an area that is considered in a steep downturn as well (housing and economy wise) and although i have not applied for a new card, i still got a boatload of credit cards (a dozen or more, from my days of playing the zero % balance transfer arbitrage) amongst them some with a decent limits 30k+. No cancellation yet , i still get a boatload of balance transfer offers (some zero % as well but with an uncapped 3% fee) and recently got my credit limit increased on a Citicard. Doesn't mean anything to me since I do not carry a single balance but I'll keep the cards around in case the credit becomes easy again and the balance transfer arbitrage profitable. So i guess it depends.
