On the contrary, it makes perfect sense.

Many conservatives believe that the Republican Party has abandoned them in pursuit of the mythical "middle." McCain is a fine example. That's why he went with Palin, but the media had a field day with her.

Meanwhile, lots of liberals are too afraid to call themselves as such. Instead, they think of themselves as "moderate." This thread is a perfect example of self-proclaimed "moderates" who are just as liberal as you are.
