Toshiba Cuts PC Sales, Shipment Targets as Global Demand Falls

Tokyo, Oct. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Toshiba Corp. said it lowered
its targets for global sales and shipments of personal computers
for the year through March 1998 in response to a drop in demand
for PCs.

Toshiba said it reduced its PC sales target for the year by
more than a quarter, from 1 trillion yen ($82.8 billion) to 740
billion yen.

The Tokyo-based maker of communication equipment and
consumer electronics said it cut PC shipment targets for the same
period by about 15 percent, from 3.7 million computers to 3.15
million.

Last week Toshiba posted unconsolidated current, or pretax
profit of 25.4 billion yen for the half-year period ended Sept.
30, a fall of 47.2 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Toshiba's shares fell 3 percent to 533, in line with a
decline in the broader market.

Actually, I did a lot of hand-holding with bull friends today. Telling them they are not stupid just because they invest stupidly. -g-
Mike, same here. A friend had bought in to the "buy dip" so adamently that he sunk more than 50k in to CPQ, INTC, MSFT and TRV just last Tuesday when the market was up 139. I didn't know what to advise him. Told him to sell MSFT and TRV yesterday around noon and wait for some strength on the oters. I hope he took my advice.
