Note that Genghis was expansionary in the medieval warm period, en.wikipedia.org which was a great time for northern people. They made the most of it.

Once that time finished, and Little Ice Ages returning, it became very unpleasant way up north, with Greenland getting too cold again and the Mongols had to huddle in their tents to try to keep warm. Their numbers must have dropped hugely as it all went bad again. 10 children per woman produces a LOT of people over a period of a couple of hundred years and if they have plenty of food and are taking over from neighbours, killing the opposing males, it's easy to become umpty millions in a couple of centuries.

Breeding shifted again to southern climes during the cold.

The USA has 38,000 or so in Afghanistan, to increase to 60,000 later this year. That's not many, even with great air cover which is not a lot of use on a door to door basis.

As you note, 32 million + 172 million + 180 million is not a lot compared with 1,300 million in China and 900 million non-Moslems in India[give or take a few populations of New Zealand], especially if GDP per capita is taken into account.

<now let us see what obama can do > After stabilizing Afghanistan and Pakistan, I guess he will leave a garrison there and send 50,000 over the Hindu Kush to liberate Tibet.

Just kidding. They should really all beat their swords into cyberphones, netbooks and base stations, sending the royalties to me.
