I, too, have read that tryptophan being sleep inducing is a figment.

Well it plays such an important role, I don't find the notion of it being a figment, an either or, that useful. Falling asleep in front of the TV is not going to provide the basis for sound sleep. So the problem is more one of what to eat, as opposed to waking up. Eating late at night is totally contrary to your circadian rhythms, it promotes inflammation.
