You are right that the car dealer won't go out of business, but they will have less business. The larger repair shops have the diagonstic tools as well, doesn't seem to be a problem but i do give you that they still struggle with hybrids etc.

Maybe I am biased but my first and only dealings with a car dealer when i arrived in this country was dreadful, so I decided I am not going to set a foot into their salesroom or shop again. I think may people feel the same. I do not think that car dealerships will go out of business, i just think they will have a smaller and smaller piece of the shrinking pie long term. Short term the " cash for clunker" program (if it passes) may provide a nice boost. Too bad my old clunker does not qualify since it's mileage is not bad enough :-(.
