Powell is a nightmare for the hardcore wingers; he has a distinguished record in public service, he has no political ambitions in the future and he is richer than many of his critics put together, except maybe Rush. IOW, he is untouchable no matter how much playground mud they sling at him. If I were Powell, I would appear perdiocally to point out how much the hate jocks scream and rant at a distinguished moderate like himself trying to steer the party in another direction. Remind everyone just how they look and sound to the broader electorate. Shrill and totally self-obsessed.
