You're right in a way bongsnort - the (D)'s didn't purge anybody.

They just let it be known that racists weren't welcome in their party anymore. Many southern (D)'s got the message, with most becoming (R)'s or being replaced by (R)'s, and a very few actually changing their positions on race, at least publicly.

The (R)'s EAGERLY adopted the spurned racists, and have played various tunes of racial politics in the south ever since.
