The inverse relationship between the dollar and commodities makes sense. When speculators sense the dollar will be worth less tomorrow they buy commodities (including gold), which are hard, valuable assets. Of course, the commodities prices are also influenced by factors independent of the dollar... oil, wheat, pork bellies and so forth are affected by how much people drive, the weather in Kansas and how many ribs folks BBQ on Memorial Day.
