20-30% less is about right nationally across all specialties. Your milage may vary as it (strongly) depends on how much or little a specific doc is willing to contract for.

If medicare is such a great deal for primary care docs, why do many primary internists choose to not accept assignment? That's a huge trend in Phoenix, and there are known to be more than a few Medicare-covered individuals out here.

I will spot you the hassle factor. With medicare it's pretty much a simple claims payment decision thumbs up or down and away they go. Not much need for discussion, it's a waste of time.
