Very possible. Older bias ply tires rarely lasted more that 12k miles. Everything on older cars went out fast. Tune-ups were needed every 12k miles, exhaust systems lasted a couple of years max. Brakes, belts and hoses also suffered short lives.

had to get new tires every 6000 miles. Is that possible or is he full of it?

In the 50's I was replacing at least one tire every few weeks. Could occasionally afford one with some tread left.
