He was going nowhere for the moment but he had good reason to remain cocky and defiant.

God knows that's an excellent reason to go to war. Venezuela? Cuba? NK? Argentina? Where next?

"Nonetheless, Saddam was contained. He was going nowhere."

He was going nowhere for the moment but he had good reason to remain cocky and defiant. He was building alliances and was gradually whittling the sanctions to the fine point of pointlessness.

I repeat.....he was going nowhere. Most intel confirmed that scenario.

Only if you foolishly believe geopolitics of the world are unchangeable, could you think the resources needed to keep him contained him were indefatigable or that they would be supported until the end of time.

I don't think you understand the politics of the region. On his eastern border were the Iranians who despised him. To the South, there was Kuwait who despised and feared him and had the backing of the US. To the West was Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria. SA is made up of hard core Sunnis who thought Saddam was too secular. Jordan despised Saddam for his dictatorial ways. He had a half ass relationship with Syria.

HE WAS GOING NO WHERE! In fact, he was afraid one of those countries would attack him.

And then you have to ask yourself if containing him in this fashion was as Albright stated it was 'worth it.'

How many people died under Saddam during the sanctions and how many died during the war?
