Would your mind be open to it? Look up how Norway has been doing during this recession and tell me more about why you think socialism has been an utter failure.

The fact is that the US already has some socialist programs in place and we have had for a very long time. I think what you and others really hate is communism and dictatorships, but you conflate them with socialism, because you don't understand the difference.

Socialism if taken to the extreme is a bad thing. However, free markets if taken to the extreme of laissez faire is also a bad thing. Regulated free markets are what have made America great. Socialist safety nets are what have lead to fewer wild swings that would come with total laissez faire economics. It is the combination of regulated free markets and social safety nets that is the secret sauce of a prosperous America. Extremes of any sort are the antithesis of what has helped America prosper.

I am against extremism of any kind, because it is almost always a bad thing. You represent the extremist view that laissez faire, no regulation and no safety nets are the way to go. The Europeans generally take social safety nets to the extreme as well. The middle ground is what we need to look for. However, as long as you persist in the ideology of laissez faire, we don't have much to discuss, because we will always be fundamentally at odds.
