Euroquay?

I saw Montevideo featured on one of those PBS world travel shows, weather looks awesome

Have you ever heard of the Patagonian Rio Negro region in Argentina? Seems right up your alley....Bohemian, self sufficient sub-culture region...lots of societal dropouts who live happily within their means...Music and food are the staple...Mixed ethnic groups...Live and let live attitude

One can live very cheaply and happily there, according to the show I saw...Globe trekker

Uruguay. Spent a few days there last year. Didn't see much of Montevideo- went east from the airport, but plenty of pleasant places along and near the coast. Very spacious interior - most of that huge population is concentrated in and Montevideo.
Good site for keeping up with U, in ingles:

Helpful travel hint #1:
Often the best place to exchange your clownbux is the toll stations located every few miles on some of the major highways (some roads are free, some toll. No time or reason). Thay take up to $100 bill w/o question, and the forex rate is clearly posted as you pull up. It seemed to vary some as you went down the road. As it happened, we were there when the US dollar was tanking against the peso (~20 peso/dollar, April 2008), an unusual condition.
Load up at duty free. They have a generous quota, and excellent Cuban rum (obviously 3rd party info <g>). Good local wine in every supermarket.
Gas is not cheap (~$6/gal at the time), and distances are long. Drivers are reasonably civilized, but I still got nervous around urban intersections.
Plenty of decent broadband. Did meet some US expatriates, including a guy from New Jersey we rented a place from.
You could maybe survive on $500/mo., but overall cost of living appears to be in same ballpark as U.S.

If you are thinking about heading South, Don't forget about Belize: tiny, tiny former pirate/British colony, ethnically diverse with several languages and dialects spoken but official language is English, low population density, corrupt, lazy, quirky Carribean style government/politics, some high crime areas to be avoided, poverty in many places, keep it toned down and go local and you will be fine or live in one the touristy Expat areas if you have the money.

They will let you stay their forever as a tourist if you pay some small monthly fee or they have a retirement program (show them proof of some small income and they will let you import some personal belongings and give you residency.) They had one of the cheapest buy a citizenship programs around for a while, but it got shutdown because people were taking bribes and selling passports to anybody and everybody that wanted one.

It was on my short list of places for years until I figured out that my best path for me is to first head to the Great White North and then to think about heading South at some later time.
