I have an Oster, and like it, good results, easy to clean and much cheaper than fancy Japanese models. I've never used the express cycles or jam cooking, so I can't speak about them. I would avoid any model that makes vertical loaves as they are unwieldy, hard to slice or use. It's good to have shorter/longer mixing and rising cycles for white bread vs. whole wheat. It helps to fiddle with the recipe and add a little pure gluten to keep the loaves from collapsing as they cool.

Whichever one you get, make sure you can "interrupt" the process so you can use it to make dough for cinnamon rolls, the same soft, smooth gooie ones we use to have in the school cafeteria...

bread machines. Do you have any recommendations?

I don't have any recommendations. We've had only two, and if the first hadn't jumped off the counter, we'd still be using it. Strangely, I saw an identical one in a yard sale Saturday, never been used.
