just in in-tray

Notes from a meeting with a US banker last week that I thought interesting....

Most US people do not save and probably will never save. Over 25% of Wal-Mart's customers have no bank accounts - i.e. they live paycheck to paycheck. About 95% of the total savings in the US come from just 5% of the population....

Let's start this week off with a bit of humor (Paul Kedrosky's site):

A hedge fund manager friend of mine got a call from a "very nice gentleman" at the IRS recently. The conversation went, he says, like this:

Me: "Should I make the check out to the IRS?"

Agent: "We would prefer it if you make it out to the US Treasury."

Me: "Is that what Tim Geithner does? Oops, I forgot, he doesn't usually pay his taxes."

Agent: [Chuckling] "I'm not going to comment on that."

Me: "How about if I save you busy folks some time and just make it out to AIG or Goldman Sachs?"
