They keep running for re-election so that they can pocket more money before they get kicked out. As politicians become more senior, the power side of the equation kicks in. The job of Senator is a dream job. Big budget where you can stash your spouse/kids in jobs. Prestige. Aides to suck up to you. Lobbyists who court you and pay you. And the best part: You never have to accomplish anything. Look at John Kerry for a great example. That's why people like Obama can take off two years from the job. All Senators have to do is keep fooling the voters.
