The GOP is in no danger of extinction....

That remains to be seen. The coming demographic changes make the future look somewhere between challenging and bleak for the Republicans.

But usually when confronted with changing or dying, politicians choose change...

Note the difference in the way the two parties reacted. The Democrats went into their tradition disarray and then proceeded to marginalize their most radical elements and broaden their base. The Republicans got more rigid, marginalized their moderates and narrowed their base.
