Even if you were correct, this isn't 2005 anymore. Let's fast forward to today. Intel dual socket out performs AMD 4 socket in virtually every category and the pain is only going to get worse.

[...]

The announcement is slated for May 26. Boyd Davis, Intel's general manager of Server Platforms Marketing Group, will host the roll-out event and "discuss how this new server product raises the standard in cost-effective RISC replacement solutions," according to an Intel note about the event.

That may be. At least it will be on the product's merits and not abuse of monopoly power.

Re: The 8-core "Nehalem-EX" Xeon processor is designed for servers that can use more than two processors

So they'll have 4 socket boards available for it? That might be a decent machine.

We have ~2 year old AMD systems that are 32 core, and their performance is very, very, good. It's amazing what you can do with that kind of processing power. Dataset preparation for the annual hurricane season using specially shot satellite imagery, for example. Big AMD boxes were the only ones that could handle the processing load in a reasonable time frame.

Nice to see Intel is able to provide a little competition after all these years of being an also-ran (though it was able to mint money through abusive monopoly tactics).
