Higher state and city taxes on alcohol is nothing new. I suspect special taxes on soda is. But I would be extremely surprised if something like that were to pass. Or even be seriously proposed.

One part of the problem with government picking nutritional winners and losers is its demonstrated inability to differentiate between them. One one hand, wine is sin-taxed. On the other, it's recommended for its health benefits.

It seems to me that the government meddling in nutrition has done at least as much harm as good. So far they have mostly just steered people wrong. If they get more heavy handed, the damage is compounded.
