I suspect special taxes on soda is. But I would be extremely surprised if something like that were to pass. Or even be seriously proposed.

I certainly hope that you are right though I would note that 20 years ago this idea would have been fodder for an Onion article and not Bloomberg or the WSJ. These nanny laws have gone from the utterly absurd to at least being possible...and the distance from the possible to actually becoming law is much shorter.

The fact is that Obama only has funding for half of his proposed health care plan and he is going to need to raise taxes to pay for the rest. They are going to be casting out for targets and those products and behaviors that are considered unhealthy are going to be increasingly tempting as time goes on. It might not happen now, but I fully expect it to occur in the next five to ten years or so.
