"Ever heard of Porgy & Bess?

I didn't know Porgy and Bess was an opera. Clearly, I know very little about everything."

Get a copy of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong performing it. I gave up opera many years ago, but this was a classic performance and one of Gershwin's greatest works (Rhapsody in Blue, American in Paris, and the Preludes being the other important works).

The best performance of Porgy & Bess in existence, however, isn't an opera -- it is an instrumental interpretation in the style of Dixieland jazz, performed by The Jim Cullum Jazz Band (of San Antonio's Riverwalk Jazz fame, now out of print). If you can find it, it is one of the best CDs ever pressed. IMO.
