The problem with a hoax like this is that it silences legitimate skepticism and criticisms. Like with the Danny Williams (clinton son) hoax at the time when Bill Clinton was in so much hot water. Bill knew it was a hoax but the White House didn't go to press with all kinds of defensive reports. Bill just smiled and said naaah and it was the best thing that could have happened for him. The red hot issues he was dealing with cooled off significantly. People who had jumped on that hoax were too embarrassed by having attacked him unfairly.
