If they have negative externalities, shouldn't the users help to pay for them?

I love this line of thinking. Universal health care is a human right that should be enjoyed by all....and now that you have it, we can justify all sorts of intrusions into your life based on costs. There is virtually nothing that people do that cant be seen through the prism of health care costs.

The food and drink taxes are first and already on the table, but there are any number of other activity taxes that sound absurd now but will see as possible down the road. How about an extreme sports tax? Why should I pay for somebody's skiing injury? After all, it is a "negative externality" on the system.

Hmmm, maybe we can get the Christian Right on board. I certainly think that there would be less health care costs if people stopped having sex outside of marriage. Perhaps we should get our heads together and try and figure out a way to tax that.

Despite all of the possible negatives that I see with a national health care system, I could probably be convinced to support one if it wasnt for what I believe will be the inevitable massive intrusion on people's lives that it is going to create. The busybody's in the fundamentalist camp have never managed to make much of an impact on my life. I doubt I will be able to say the same for the busybody's on the left.
