Maybe if people took a serious look at sugar they could revisit the ridiculous situation vis-a-vis corn sweetener aka high fructose corn syrup and domestic sugar cane and sugar beets versus imported cane sugar. Maybe things have changed and I missed it, but historically the quota on sugar imports has been effectively a huge subsidy to domestic corn and sugar beets, at the expense of many relatively poor developing countries. The first couple google hits on a quick search seemed to indicate that the current quota is actually a lot lower than it was in 1991, due to "free trade" no doubt. I'm guessing something similar goes on with domestic corn based ethanol versus imported cane-based product.
