Sunspot counts go back to 1645. Thanks to ice core data we have CO2 data going back hundreds of thousands of years.

Learning about the ice core data changed my thinking on CO2. Before I learned that CO2 had lagged (instead of preceded) temperature changes for hundreds of thousands of years, I was willing to believe CO2 was an important driver of temperature.

As for models, they're only as good as their assumptions. And their predictions over the limited time the models have existed isn't good.
