Not that I condone behavior that raises the risk of getting AIDS, but Magic Johnson is doing fine 15 years after his HIV diagnosis and many, many others are living much longer with the latest drugs. I don't know the stats of those with HIV compared to those who get AIDS and die now, but I'm sure the ratio of survivors is drastically higher now.

I don't advocate trying to fix America's health with all kinds of punitive taxes and controls myself. But if we are going to make efforts in that direction, let's go after the biggest killers first. Reducing smoking in the US was a great success, with many lives saved. Public health policy can make a difference.
